Mystery of Egypt

The signature journey that is Sea and Sand is the perfect travel exploration for those who love to explore but relish comfort and luxury as they go. Combining the highlights of the country with high class tourist accommodation throughout, we begin our journey with that most iconic of Egyptian destinations, the Pyramids of Giza.

After starting with such a sensory explosion you might wonder how anything else can match—but don’t worry, Egypt has plenty more secrets to share and the splendors continue to unveil day after day. We delve deep into the psyche of ancient civilizations with a guided tour around the incredible Egyptian Museum, and we experience the oh-so-traditional shopping sensation only found in the souks of Cairo.

Atmospheric Aswan, the famed Philae Temple, and surrounding areas continue to inspire before we sail the waters of the mighty Nile River on a 7-night luxury cruise to Luxor. It goes without saying that we pay homage to the world-famous temples of Luxor and Karnak but we also journey to some slightly less-visited marvels, including Dendera and Abeydos Temples.

Transport throughout is luxurious, but discovery and adventures abound as we get to experience the “ship of the desert”, a traditional felucca, 4X4 quad bike or SUV, as well as a wonderful day aboard our private boat on the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea.

Of course, no trip to Egypt would be complete without sampling the best of Egyptian fare. We strike a happy balance between classic dishes and international cuisine—this is a trip for the discerning globetrotter who enjoys quality dining and upgraded accommodation without sacrificing any of the authenticity of traditional travel.

With an almost overwhelming number of exhibits on offer, your experienced guide will ensure you don’t miss the ‘must-see’ attractions. We also visit the wonderful Citadel of Salah El Din, perhaps the most impressive medieval fortresses in the world, where we can wander its foreboding walls and marvel at the impenetrable gateways and towers.
It also houses no less than three places of worship, and we visit one of them—the Mohamed Ali Mosque, a truly impressive building boasting a 52-meter high dome and twin 84-meter tall minarets towering above the landscape.

We take lunch in the traditional Cairo eatery of El Hussein located deep within the every-changing alleyways of Khan el Khalili bazaar district. After a filling local meal you’ll get the chance to test your bartering skills in the souks.

After breakfast we wave goodbye to the hullabaloo of Cairo as we head to the airport for our flight to Aswan. The boat offers the ultimate in comfort and facilities as we explore the region that’s home to what are surely the some of the jewels in Egypt’s crown.

After settling in and an enjoyable lunch we head to the world-famous structure that is the High Dam. This was completed in 1970 and not only provides a constant supply of renewable energy for the whole country but, even more importantly, ended the cycle of drought and floods that plagued the Nile region.

We then take a motorboat ride to the Temple of Philae. Truly impressive, it was constructed to honor the goddess of Isis and stands on an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam.

Dinner is taken in our luxurious vessel’s dining room with some welcome time to relax after what’s been a full day of travel and exploration.

DAY 5 - Aswan | Abu Simbel - Sound & Light Philae

This morning we take to the air and take the short flight to the wonder of human achievement that is Abu Simbel. This incredible complex of enormous temples dedicated to Rameses II was rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s, thanks to a herculean effort sponsored by UNESCO. The gargantuan statues of Rameses at each of the entrances to the temples are gloriously imposing, and wonderful examples of the splendor of ancient Egyptian architecture.

We fly back to enjoy lunch on our boat before heading out for yet another bucket-list experience, the sound and light show at the Philae Temple. Watch in awe as Egyptian gods and goddesses rise in turn to chronicle their ancient tales of life as it was thousands of years before our own.

After this roller-coaster sensory journey we can relax over dinner aboard our sumptuous floating palace.

DAY 6 - Kom Ombo | Kom Ombo - Felucca to Kitchener Island

Breakfast is served on board before we set sail for the double temple of Kom Ombo. This unusual structure is dedicated to not one, but two gods: the falcon god, Haroeis, and the crocodile god, Sobek. This dual building is perfectly symmetrical, with matching rooms, courts, halls, and sanctuaries for each god.

Lunch is enjoyed as we wend our way back to Aswan before we board a different mode of water-going transport, the traditional Egyptian Felucca, and head to the botanist’s paradise of Kitchener’s Island. This small isle surrounded by the muddy Nile waters was given to Lord Horatio Kitchener in the 1890s, and this lover of beautiful plants decided to turn the whole island into a botanical park. Covering nearly 7 hectares and boasting flora from Africa, India, and the Far East, it’s also a haven for bird life and well worth an afternoon of exploration.

DAY 7 - Edfu | Edfu Temple

Today we enjoy a more leisurely start, with breakfast, lunch and dinner taken on board. We sail to Edfu, where our next sensory fix is more than satisfied by a visit to the impressive Ptolemaic Temple of Horus. This mighty structure was completed somewhere between 230 to 57 BC. It’s one of the largest temples in all of Egypt and, most importantly, is incredibly preserved. This is thanks to the wonders of the desert sand, which filled and covered the structure following the banning of the pagan cult that worshiped there. Today it’s possible to visit once again, thanks to excavation works that began back in the mid 19th century.

Oberoi Zahra Cruise
Meals: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner.

DAY 8 - Luxor | Karnak Temple - Luxor Museum

All meals are once again taken on board and we traverse the waters to one of what is, for many, the highlight of the tour—the city of Luxor. There is much to see here, and today we experience the breathtaking wonder that is Karnak Temple. Everything you’ve seen so far will pale as you gaze in awe upon the rows and rows of hieroglyphic carved columns, towering statues, and endless sphinxes. The fact that this awe-inspiring structure dates back to 2055 BC is almost incomprehensible, and is an incredible example of just how advanced the ancient Egyptians really were.

We also visit the fascinating Luxor Museum where you can feast your eyes on one of the best archaeological collections in all of Egypt. And thanks to the inside information of your experienced guide you’ll be whisked to the highlights on show, with tales of ancient history bringing alive the wonders—not simply of yesteryear—but of a time thousands of years in the past where Pharaohs walked the earth, the sun god, Ra, was worshiped above all else, and riches beyond our wildest imagination were entombed for millennia along with their mummified owners.

DAY 9 - Luxor | Valley of the Kings - Dendarah - Abeydos

Today the West Bank beckons, and after an early breakfast we head to what is perhaps one of the most famous locations in all of Egypt—The Valley of the Kings. Many superlatives have been used to describe these archaic tombs, but nothing can prepare you for experiencing it for yourself. Discover more about the journey of the rich and powerful as they passed from this life to the next, and, of course, you get the chance to visit the tomb of perhaps the most famous king of all, Tutankhamun.

It’s a full morning and we’ll be glad to return to our boat for a delicious lunch as we sail to Quina. Here we visit what many consider to be one of the best temples in all of Egypt, the Dendarah Temple of Hathor. One of the lesser visited of Egypt’s temples, we wander unencumbered by crowds. Soak up the sacred atmosphere, pose for photos beneath enormous columns, and creep along the secret passage that snakes beneath massive stone structures above.

The delights continue as we visit the Abeydos Temple, built by the father of Rameses II, Seti I, and the place where the ancient Egyptians believed the Lord of the Underworld to be buried. The colorful artwork that still adorns the walls is amongst the best preserved in all of the Egypt and you’ll have to pinch yourself that these really were created thousands of years in the past.

The evening is spent aboard our boat, with dinner served and some welcome time to relax.

After lunch it’s time to visit another “must-see”, Luxor Temple. There’s plenty of time to explore, including the famed Avenue of Sphinxes. At 3km long you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for the cartouche of Cleopatra, bestowed when she visited the temples with Marc Antony—or, more easily, ask your Egypt Deluxe guide to point it out for you.

This evening we enjoy a sumptuous “farewell” dinner as tomorrow a new adventure beckons.
