Hurghada & Luxor

The Sea and Sand tour of Sailors and Cowboys provides a wonderful opportunity to combine some of Egypt’s most fascinating sights with the bliss of white-powder beaches, sailing, and experiencing some of the most pristine coral reef on the planet.

We begin in the vibrant Red Sea city resort of Hurghada, a place that’s all things to all people. From fine dining to pubs and clubs, authentic Egyptian markets and buzzing malls, the metropolis can be as crazy or calm as you wish. For the first half of the trip our home is that of a luxury yacht, allowing us the freedom to discover all the wonders in the vicinity without having to compromise on comfort and facilities.

We visit the paradise resort of El Gouna, feast on the freshest of sea food (vegetarian and vegan options are of course available for those who require), spy dolphins frolicking in the sparkling blue waters, snorkel with technicolored fish of all shapes and sizes, and enjoy an heavenly day at the marine reserve of Giftun Island.

Suitably refreshed, the second half of our week concentrates on discovery and adventure. The ancient city of Luxor awaits us and we waste no time in starting our exploration. The hallowed sites of Karnak and Luxor Temples astound with their towering columns, elaborate hieroglyphics, endless sphinxes, and enormous statues. Get up close and personal with mummies at the Luxor Museum, and tread the final paths of Pharaohs and their Queens to the tombs of the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens.

This tour packs a whole lot of adventure into six days, yet perfectly balances the fine line between discovery and relaxation for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

DAY 4 - Hurghada - Luxor ( Luxor East Bank) | Karnak Temple - Luxor Temple - Luxor Museum

It’s an early start today as we board our transport and hit the road towards the fabled city of Luxor. We arrive in time for a filling breakfast, just the fortification needed for the adventures that lie ahead.

Not only is the ancient city home to the world’s largest open-air museum, but it’s one of the most archeologically rich places in the world. And today we get to explore a plethora of its highlights. The must-see locations of both Karnak and Luxor Temples reveal their wonders, with the tales of old brought to life by the skills of your Egypt Deluxe Egyptologist.

These awe-inspiring constructions are linked by the famous Avenue of Sphinxes. At 3km long you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for the cartouche of Cleopatra, bestowed when she visited the temples with Marc Antony—or, more easily, ask your guide to point it out for you.

Luxor Museum is next on the agenda, and this is true highlight of the trip, with the chance to gaze upon two royal mummies—one of which is believed by some to be none other than Rameses I himself!

Our luxury hotel, the Steigenberger Nile Palace, is our home for two nights. Here you can relax and enjoy stunning views over the Nile and the surrounding mountains. The evening is free for you to enjoy the wonderful hotel facilities, swim in the pool, relax in the spa and wellness area, or take advantage of the beauty treatments or fitness room.

DAY 5 - Luxor West Bank | Valley of the Kings and Queens - Temple of Queen Hatshepsut

We take an early breakfast as there’s much to explore today. We head across to the West Bank where our first stop is the fabled Valley of the Kings. Perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in all of Egypt, many superlatives have been used to describe these archaic tombs but nothing can prepare you for experiencing it for yourself.

Discover more about the journey of the rich and powerful as they passed from this life to the next, and, of course, you get the chance to visit the tomb of who is probably the most famous king of all, Tutankhamun.

The Valley of the Queens is next up, and is no less impressive. The final resting place of the wives of the Pharaohs, back then the site was named Ta-Set-Neferu, which translates to “place of beauty”. Tombs such as that of Queen Nefertari delight and astound, with the vibrancy of the painted colors within looking like it was only carried out yesterday, instead of thousands of years in the past.

Of course, no trip to Luxor would be complete without treading the hallowed walkway that leads to the incredible Temple of Hatshepsut, stopping at the Colossi of Memnon along the way. These two enormous, 3,400-year-old statues will prime you for the truly outstanding sights that lie ahead, the first of which is the temple of one of the first female Pharaohs—Hatshepsut. This striking architectural masterpiece with its dramatic sheer cliff backdrop is a fitting tribute for the ‘queen who ruled as a king’.

This temple is part of the wider complex of Deir el Bahari, and we also get the chance to experience the temples of King Mentuhotep and that of Thutmose III. After today’s exploration you’ll be glad of another evening to relax and enjoy the comforts of your 5 star hotel.
